For a good number of Philadelphians, the term “South Philly Slide” has long since been applied to a driving style that involves the act of slowly sliding through a stop sign at a four-way intersection in South Philly. However, the recent performance of our baseball team could very well give new meaning to the term.
Throughout most of the summer the Phillies have been neck and neck with the Braves, but lately, the Phils have been allowing key opportunities to slip away. Losing series to teams like the Mets and Marlins, two teams sitting at the bottom of the division, should not happen.
We are feeling the pain of this South Philly Slide as we are now in the position of having lost 10 of the last 11 series since our sweep of the Marlins back at the beginning of August. With only 17 games left in the season and 7.5 games behind the 1st place Braves, we have to hit the brakes hard on this slide if we have any chance of making the post-season.
But, let’s not give up hope just yet. In 2007, we faced a similar situation when the Phils were 7 games behind the Mets with 17 games to go. The Phillies overcame the deficit to win the division eleven years ago and there’s no reason that we can’t do it again.
We face the Braves 7 times before the close of the season and with the other games being divided up between the Mets, Marlins and the Rockies, the opportunity is there to get it done! So let’s see if Gabe can get the guys back in the driver’s seat and on the road to victory.
